Valle Venia Art & Science: BASS Project (Bridging Art and Science Symposium)

B.A.S.S. | Bridging Art and Science Symposium

The B.A.S.S. Project is a two-part showcase consisting of a neuroscientific and philosophical symposium led by international scientists produced as a musical, literary and cinematographic event. The event includes international artists connected uniquely by their content — an experience that changes us.

Led by physicians Dr. Johanna Michel & Dr. Leo H. Schmidt, the two have an interdisciplinary and multimodal medical centre to treat chronic pain. In addition to their work in medicine, Dr. Michel and Dr. Schmidt are artists - writers, composers, and visual artists - and have organized events, including the Bridging Art and Science Symposium (B.A.S.S.), through their work in both science and art domains.

The project's main themes are perception, identity, self, empathy, time, space and pain. The neuroscientific basis of identity formation and intersubjectivity manifests thematically through the artists who perform in the event.

Performers include actors, musicians, scientists and philosophers from 26 nations. As scientists and artists, we are trying to increase political and public awareness of the neurological and socio-cultural connections in perception, mind and soul from the point of view of neuroscience and philosophy to quantum gravitation. We do this by combining scientific thinking and passion to push society towards self-efficacy.

The framework of B.A.S.S. is a show of scientists, actors, musicians, and artworks who together represent connections to develop awareness and understand the meaning of their actions, identities, consciousnesses and personal responsibility.

In the current times of increasing conflicts and violence, we want to contribute to and promote reconciliation and courage on a social and individual level.
